New South Wales was the first State in Australia to be colonized by Europeans and subsequently was the first to grow the grapevine (there are no native vitis species in Australia). The State, lying on the continent’s east coast, boasts an incredibly diverse range of climates from coastal, such as the Shoalhaven Coast region lying south of Sydney, to Alpine, across the top of the Great Dividing Range, where hardy growers persist at over 500m above sea level. West of the Great Dividing Range and along the inland flowing Murrumbidgee and Murray Rivers are the warm-climate regions of Riverina and Perricoota and the northern portion of the Swan Hill and Murray Darling.
One of Australia’s best known wine zones – the Hunter Valley – is in New South Wales. The Hunter Valley is about a 2-hour drive from Sydney. The Hunter Valley’s topographical features are the alluvial flats of the valleys and the gently waving hills. The climate of the Hunter Valley, with regular droughts or floods, seemed like a less than favorable place to grow grapes with hot, humid summers and cool winters. Nevertheless, since the 1800’s, persistence has been abundantly rewarded and from this valley comes benchmark, Australian Shiraz and Semillon. The Goulburn, Hunter, Paterson and Williams rivers nourish the region. The region is unofficially divided into the Lower Hunter and Upper Hunter Valley with one official sub-region Broke Fordwich. The largest concentration of vineyards is in the Lower Hunter between Cessnock and Branxton. Mudgee is a small region not far from the Hunter Valley.
Mudgee is one of the established but smaller Australian wine regions in the state. There are about 20 wineries in the Mudgee area and one of them, has been producing wines since 1858 and is the second oldest operating winery in Australia. The Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area is also known as Riverina, which has long been responsible for large amounts of inexpensive wine, and is now seeing some investment at the hands of larger producers. Sydney itself is developing its own wine region along the peripheries of the city and the wineries here are among the closest to the city.
