To the south of New South Wales is Victoria, where some exciting wines are being produced from the cool coastal areas. Victoria is a small state in area, located within easy travel distance of Melbourne. Victoria has a wealth and diversity of wine regions. Victoria’s 22 wine regions offer cool climates, which produce excellent quality wines. Victoria is tucked into the southeastern corner of the Australian mainland. The warm-climate regions of Murray Darling and Swan Hill are situated along the Murray River in the north west of the State.
Victoria’s other wine regions are generally cooler than those of the States to the north and west. One major advantage of Victoria’s wine regions is that all are within close proximity of Melbourne, Victoria’s main wine producing region is the Rutherglen/Milawa area in the northeast but smaller Victorian wine regions are at Yarra Valley, which is the closest to Melbourne, and those in the Mornington Peninsula and the Geelong area. The region of Rutherglen is known for unique fortified wine styles like Muscat, which highlight the sweetest fruit flavors concentrated by long dry autumns.
The Yarra Valley region, which is a half an hour’s drive from Melbourne has a cool climate district and is producing some of Australia's finest elegant and delicate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines. The Mornington Peninsula is producing some of the few interesting Pinot Noir wines produced in Australia. The third of the cool coastal regions is Geelong. Mildura is located in the north west of Victoria and is famed for its citrus cultivation and of course its wineries. Some of Australia's biggest and most well known wineries are based in Mildura because of the favorable conditions for grape cultivation. The Grampians are located in the mid west of Victoria. The wild sandstone formations form the western extremity of the Great Dividing Range. In the Alpine Valleys region, autumn comes fast and vignerons and winemakers strive to ripen the fruit before the frosts, creating rich, complex wines that are produced through cool summers. One of the most notable wines of the Victorian wine industry is the Shiraz.
