Australia’s largest State is located across the western third of the continent, with the wine regions mostly condensed in the southwestern portion of the State. These wine regions include the Swan District close to the State capital of Perth and, further south, the regions of Peel, Geographe, Blackwood Valley, Pemberton, Manjimup, Great Southern and Margaret River.
Located on the west coast, the relatively cool climate of the Margaret River has made extraordinary increases in wine quality. The Margaret River wine region and the wineries at Mt Barker are located far from the main Australian viticulture. Two decades ago, Margaret River was known for the classic surf break lying not far from the junction of river and sea, but entrepreneurs have spurred the development of vineyards and wineries to overcome the State’s geographic isolation. The climate of this region is basically continental, with high summer daytime temperatures and cold nights, which compliment the production of spicy, Rhone like red and white wines. Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Semillon also excel. The wines have gained a reputation for elegance rather than power. This wine region is known for fresh Sauvignon Blancs, outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons and sturdy Zinfandel.
The Great Southern Region is a large region running along the south coast of Western Australia from Lake Muiron the west to the Pallanup River on the east. The region has five sub-regions, Albany, Denmark, Frankland River, Mount Barker and Porongurup. There are with significant wine growing differences between the sub-regions.
Perth Hills climate is known for hot dry summers and cool, wet winters. Winemakers work with a variety of wine grapes, with Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon being particularly successful.
